Dr. Akinde is a long drive from where I live, but we gladly make the trip because my sons love him. My older son is Autistic, and after a traumatic experience as a toddler in a doctor's office with a very insensitive staff, he had a really hard time trusting adults to do anything (haircuts, dental cleanings, etc.) without having meltdowns for a long time. After meeting Dr. Akinde, he always feels confident and cheerful when he leaves his appointments, and he isn't afraid to go to the doctor anymore. It's important for young boys to see men in important positions that are kind, patient, inquisitive, and show concern for their health and well-being. Not all boys have that in their family/daily lives, so it means that much more when a physician takes the time to give them someone to look up to and look forward to seeing. My younger son made bird sounds while looking in people's ears for months pretending to be a doctor as a 3 year old. It's the little things that stick with children and inspire them to do great things and be kind people. We are very grateful for him and the time he takes to make kids feel safe and seen.
