“I was left with the unfortunate ...”
I was left with the unfortunate feeling like I had to lead most of the conversation and decisions around treatment options. Unfortunately this is very common with gastroenterologists. I don't know why they generally seem dismissive of IBS sufferers. I had to correct the doctor three times because she kept incorrectly stating an important part of my timeline that I was sharing with her. By the third time I felt like I had to accept the fact that she wasn't listening to me, which was really unfortunate. I was able to get the treatment that I wanted but I felt like I'm being treated like a to-do list item versus a human dealing with constant daily discomfort. Doctors who don't take a moment to empathize with you miss out on the chance to build trust with their patients. I'm sure she's having the same conversation with many of her patients but that doesn't make it okay to be disconnected and bored during our appointment.
