“The doctor asked if I wanted to ...”

The doctor asked if I wanted to retire. It was not a relevant question and I felt as if she meant I looked old enough to retire. However, when I answered "I can't," she and her assistant laughed. I did not understand why it was funny, and I felt they entertained themselves at my expense. I don't think they meant to hurt my feelings, but I did not like it.
