“Compassionate, knowledgeable therapist”
I saw Dr. Machtinger in her private practice after initially been seen and treated by her while I was inpatient for several months in a psychiatric facility where I was being treated for self-injury, multiple suicide attempts, substance abuse, eating disorder, and Bipolar I Disorder. I saw her for 1-3 times per week, for one hour sessions, for the better part of 5 years. She helped me to put my life back together again, and eventually live a happy, healthy, and meaningful life. She was warm, empathetic, encouraging, and compassionate. She is extremely knowledgeable and is especially good with young women who have newly diagnosed mental illness, problems with self-injury, and/or eating disorders. She was willing to work closely with the psychiatrist who was providing my medications, and she was always available via phone for emergencies. She is eclectic in her choice of therapeutic styles and methods, utilizing humanistic Rogerian therapy, as well as Cognitive Behavioral and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy techniques, but was also able to incorporate a wide variety of skills and tools and adapt her methods to whatever my situation required in the moment. I am friends with over a dozen women who were seen by Paula for self-injury, mental illnesses, and eating disorders/addictions who have all had excellent results with her. I cannot recommend her highly enough!
