“I recently had a visit with this...”
I recently had a visit with this maternal fetal specialist to check on my baby's swollen kidneys. While the appointment provided the necessary information, I left feeling pretty disappointed by the overall experience. Before my visit, my OB's office actually gave me a heads-up that this doctor was not exactly a warm and fuzzy person. That turned out to be very true. From the beginning, the tone of the conversation felt more judgmental than supportive. I was asked about my diet and exercise in a way that felt accusatory, especially considering the doctor did not have up-to-date information about my health. It felt like I was being questioned more than cared for.As a woman in this field, I expected more empathy. Instead, she compared my pregnancy to her own and others' in a way that made me feel like I was not doing enough. Every pregnancy is different and it is frustrating to be judged based on someone else's personal experience. This doctor is not my regular OB and I was only there for a specific issue. It felt unfair to be scrutinized during a short appointment for something unrelated. I hope she takes this feedback seriously because a little more compassion and less judgment would make a big difference for her patients.
