He abruptly left knowing it was my very first visit to Sentara, (have no primary dr, new to civilian hospital) and I did not know where to go, so I stuck my head into a room with open door to ask, and they told me ok to just leave,,, so I saw and followed the exit signs passing by billing. Turned and Stopped. Nice signs for direction, thanks so very much!! With people walking in as I was leaving I could have walked passed billing though and out the door.

Dr. Payne did an x-ray on knee previously and determined I had previous surgery in which I was told they only took bone out of my knee to fix my Talis bone that was shattered., in fact they took cartilage. I was not aware of this at all, He then x-rayed my hip and I had bursitis, I have been getting steroid shots in my knee and hip every 3 months and they really have so much. I have been diagnosed with arthritis as well.

I began have serious knee problems and injections and therapy were no longer adequate to address the pain. Both knees were bone on bone with arthritis. Dr Payne explained the options, risks and expectations with TKR for both knees. I asked about doing both knees at the same time and thankfully he told me he would not only not recommend that, but he would not perform the surgery. I am so glad I followed his advice. We ended up replacing the left knee first and then 6 weeks later the right knee. It gave me time to heal and gain some needed strength in the first knee which is needed in order to get up and down and walk. I am still in PT and gaining strength and mobility everyday. It is not without pain but Dr Payne was very clear about what to expect and the time it would take to recover. I am now 9 weeks out on the first knee and have very little pain in that knee. I am only 3 weeks out on the right knee and it is still tender but does not hurt as much as it did before surgery.

However the Dr. Is trying steroid shot and Rx for 60 days to see how my knee responds. The only thing is it took WAY to long to check in with the front desk.

Dr. Payne and his staff were very helpful in explaining what I need to do and what the diagnosis is. I know what is expected of me to be able to get the surgery done that I need. Also, my wallet had fell out of my pants in the examination room and I didn't realize it until I left, by then the office was closed. Dr. Payne's nurse found it and called to tell me she had it and waited for me to get back to the office to get it.

Last year I suffered a stress fracture of my right femoral neck. Another Doctor from Atlantic Orthopedic operated in Feb 2020 and inserted three long screws to hold the bone together until the stress fracture healed. Even after several months the femoral neck was now jammed into the hip socket causing bone on bone pain. In July Dr. Payne removed the screws and then completed a total hip replacement. Since Dr. Shall left the practice, I am now seeing Dr. Payne for my knees also (left knee operated on/bad since 11/2001, right knee started 4/2019). Dr. Payne is also very efficient. I only see one other doctor who sees me within a few minutes of arriving like Dr. Payne does. THAT is a major plus!
