From start to finish, I knew I had the right surgeon for the job. My shoulder was destroyed beyond compare and Dr. Guttmann weighed all of the options with me. We were originally going to install a reverse replacement but Dr. Guttmann ordered both reverse and anatomical and made the best decision in surgery. He went with the anatomical to give me a better quality of life for sports and athletics. I have had zero pain since coming out of the OR. Dr. Guttman is the best!

The staff from the pre surgery nurse through the post op were very informative. Dr. Guttman's skill as a surgeon is phenominal.. The use of teh recommended ice/compression machine greatly reduced my discomfort and expedited the recovery. I did not require narcotics for pain reduction. Dr. Guttman's post operation description of the surgery was very informative.

My shoulder was really bad. Dr. G.did a reverse shoulder replacement. In order to accomplish the replacement I needed a bone graft in order to attach the "ball" appliance. Five years out and I'm doing great. Weight lifting, biking and swimming (3-4x/week) etc. Works fine with no pain. Larry Smolka

It won't happen quickly, but it will happen well!

Dr. Guttmann doesn't have the best descriptions for patients who don't have the medical background to fully understand what is going on with a very complicated shoulder. However, I always felt very confident in knowledge as a doctor and his communication with my PT so she knew what to do to help me get back to full strength. I was very worried at the first visit that surgery was going to be his recommendation. He didn't rule it out 100%, but took the frozen shoulder as the first problem we needed to work on before we could see if there was more damage that needed surgery.

I went to Dr. Guttmann with a severe shoulder dislocation. Rather than automatically scheduling surgery, as too many surgeons do, he took a different approach. He recognized that with physical therapy and work at home, I might be able to regain enough function to not need surgery at all. He was right, and as badly as I was injured when I went to him, I've made a remarkable recovery. He is overall the very best doctor I've ever seen. He's a great communicator as well, and a just a fine person. I can't recommend him enough.

After visiting a Dr. in Alb, I was told that my shoulder injury was inoperable and that they could only offer me pain management. After reviewing my MRI, Dr. Guttman did'nt give it a second thought and scheduled surgery right away. He descibed my injury from 1 to 10 as an 11. He took the time needed during surgery to repair. 10 weeks later, I am on the mend. I have months of PT ahead, however have very little pain. I can sleep at night now, and enjoy life again. Dr. Guttman is still in the process of the full diagnosis, but upon the first visit, he had a clear hypothesis and upon getting my MRI results today, it looks like he was spot on. I have my follow-up consult with him on my MRI results and feel trust in making the next decision. I requested zero pain killers and narcotics. The moment I left the OR, I had ZERO pain. I have not had one ounce of pain the entire time. My shoulder was as bad as they get. I had a full anatomical replacement with reattaching my labrum, long biceps, scapular tendon and repaired 3 of 4 rotator cuffs. A major surgery. The only treatment I used was the polar ice machine. The thing i loved most about the Polar ice machine was that it packed and held my shoulder in place, while icing it. it definitely helped with healing and immobilizing my shoulder. I waited 14 years to do this because of the nightmare stories of shoulder surgery. If you have a shoulder in need of repair, DO NOT wait, get it repaired for your quality of life. The cold compression machine was a great help. It allowed me to not take any narcotics and it kept the post op pain not significant. The PT was quickly put into action and got me quickly on the road to recovery. I am now not taking any pain medication.

Dr. Guttman diagnosed my condition, gave me my options, and after seeing the CT scan agreed that a reverse shoulder replacement was my only option. The surgery went very well, and my recovery has been miracuilous. I expected this to be the worst of any surgery I've had, and it has been the easiest. Like magic.

Dr. Guttmann did an excellent job repairing my rotator cuff, labrum, and biceps tears. In addition, he communicated well with me and my physical therapist before and after surgery, as well as during the long rehab period. My outcome was excellent, and I recommend him highly.

When I came to Dr. Guttmann's office, I could barely lift my arm. I was in a lot of pain and my arm was practically useless because of adhesive capsullitis. All of the staff was amazing from my first visit, during my surgery and during my follow-up visits. I am 3 months post surgery and my arm is at 90%. So glad that I was referred to Dr. Guttmann's office!

I had no illusions about this surgical procedure before going into it, and i think my realism helped me come through with less pain than expected, less frustration and a much, much more determined attitude about my physical therapy. I had a very severe shoulder injury. Dr Guttman performed the operation and did an amazing job. I was fearful that I'd never regain the use of my left arm but Dr Guttman was able to repair the damage. He, his staff and the hospital are wonderful. In less than a year I can lift and use my left arm again for work and for living life.
