Derogatory and Zero Bedside Manner

While he may not remember us, the negative experience we had with him will never be forgotten. Our encounter occurred on Friday, April 29, 2016 at 1600. My three-year-old daughter, Juliana, presented with a four (4) day history of a fever and malaise that had not resolved. Juliana has multiple heart conditions (that he was made aware of) that put her at severe risk for the development of life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias which is the main reason why we sought treatment. After his assessment, he proceeded to provide me with a lecture on virology and insisted that my daughter had a simple virus. In my many years of experience as a clinician, doctoral prepared pediatric nurse, and parent I have never been spoken to in such a derogatory manner. It took everything I had in me to not raise my voice, but instead of lowering myself to his disrespectful level, I kept a level head and exited the exam room. My inclination, judgement, and distrust in his medical opinion brought us back to the clinic the following day.
Juliana was diagnosed with right upper lobe pneumonia AND strep pharyngitis on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 1100. She was subjected to multiple intramuscular injections and hours of time in a small exam room for monitoring. All of this could have been prevented and caught sooner had he just listened to my concerns for my child’s well-being. While I am not soliciting any remorse, I wanted you to be fully aware that my trust in the medical community has now diminished all thanks to one individual.
I sincerely hope that patients who seek care at Scott and White are cared for by one of the many nursing students that I have educated. I pray that they see the definition of patient advocacy and caring in action. As a Texas A&M graduate, I am utterly surprised that Dr. Allen’s bedside manner does not reflect the Aggie core values and instead negates everything the university represents. I truly hope that this never happens to another parent or child again. The situation could have become detrimental very quickly had I trusted his incorrect diagnosis and his neglect would have been the sole motivator for a preventable medical error.
