Selected by Castle Connolly as one of New York Metro’s Top Doctors for 10 years in a row, Dr. Paul Brisson has been helping his patients relieve back pain for more than 25 years. He has been acknowledged as the best back pain doctor in NYC and has been highlighted on the cover of the “Best Doctors in New York” issue of New York Magazine.
Dr. Brisson is a spine specialist in NYC who follows a conservative approach to back care. He typically starts with non-invasive treatments such as physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises before turning to back surgery or other surgical procedures. Dr. Brisson is actively involved with his patients, taking time to evaluate their overall health and medical history while determining the best course of treatment. He understands that the decision to undergo back surgery is complex and often fraught with anxiety. Dr. Brisson makes sure his patients understand their options and know what to expect during treatment. If surgery is needed, Dr. Brisson and his staff are available before, during, and after the operation to answer questions and offer advice.
Assisting Dr. Brisson is the knowledgeable physician assistant, Theresa Giammarino and nurse practitioner-surgical first assistant, Agatha Koch. Dr. Brisson also collaborates with the top spinal specialists in other fields — from physical therapists, chiropractors, pain management physicians to other orthopedic experts — in order to ensure the highest quality of comprehensive care for each of his patients.
Dr. Brisson received his MD from the University of Montreal’s School of Medicine. He has completed a broad range of postgraduate training, including Residencies in General and Orthopedic Surgery at McGill University’s Teaching Hospital Network, a Fellowship for Spinal Surgery at New York’s Hospital for Joint Diseases, and a Fellowship for Spinal Surgery at Buffalo General Hospital, where he worked with pioneering spinal surgeon Dr. Edward D. Simmons.
Dr. Brisson is no longer a Director of Spinal Surgery at New York Downtown Hospital. The New York Downtown Hospital is affiliated with NYP/ Weill Cornell Medical Center and was renamed Lower Manhattan Hospital in 2012.
