While many wounds heal naturally, others require specialized care and can be highly resistant to traditional therapies. Chronic non-healing wounds can lead to life-threatening infection and limb loss. Henry Ford Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center offers advanced care and education relating to serious wounds caused by a medical condition, injury, radiation therapy, surgery, or impaired blood flow in the limbs. Our lead physician and advanced practice providers have special training and expertise in treating acute and chronic wounds with techniques that include compression therapy, debridement (removal of damaged tissue or foreign objects from wounds) and negative-pressure wound therapy. Patients with wounds that are non-responsive to treatment may receive hyperbaric oxygen therapy to enhance the body's natural healing ability. While sitting in a comfortable, pressurized (hyperbaric) chamber, these patients breathe 100 percent oxygen that enters the blood stream to heal wounds from the inside out. This safe and painless treatment has long been used to combat decompression sickness in deep-sea divers.
