Knowing when to visit the Emergency Department versus when you can use some of the other quality care options ECU Health offers is half the battle. If you are experiencing any of the following, it is time to visit your closest ECU Health Emergency Room or call 9-1-1:

  • Chest pain

  • Drug/alcohol overdose

  • Poisoning

  • Seizure

  • Serious burns

  • Severe allergic reaction

  • Stroke

  • Sudden dizziness

  • Trouble breathing


ECU Health offers 24/7 Emergency Departments at each of our nine hospitals and a separate Children’s Emergency Department at ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, specializing in emergency care for those under the age of 18.


Some emergencies require advanced specialty care. We are fortunate in eastern North Carolina to have quick access to a Level I Adult Trauma Center and a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center at ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville.
