I was not given an opportunity to ask questions, consider the examination, or decline it before it began. When I raised my concern afterward, the clinician apologized that the examination had not been explained clearly. I explained that I could not do so beforehand because I did not know the examination was going to happen. In her subsequent response, she apologized that I "felt unprepared" and "did not feel" I had the chance to give informed consent. Although I appreciate that she offered apologies, this wording did not adequately address my concern. It was not simply a matter of feeling unprepared; the examination was not explained beforehand, and I was not given an opportunity to agree or decline. The emphasis on asking questions or opting out in the future felt as though responsibility was being placed on me for something I did not know was about to happen. I experienced discomfort during and after the examination. The possibility of this discomfort was not discussed with me beforehand in any way. This experience has also caused significant psychological distress and damaged my trust in the clinician. My central concern is consent, not whether the examination is routinely performed. I am sharing this feedback because I want ECU Physicians to understand the impact of this experience and the importance of explaining each part of an intimate examination, discussing possible discomfort, and giving patients a genuine opportunity to agree or decline before proceeding.
