“It has been over a week since I ...”
It has been over a week since I went to this particular facility to get help for a knee injury that I had sustained. I have waited this long to respond because I did not want to respond in an ugly manner about the physician assistant, Andrew Cox. I am giving him these ratings because he made me feel that he did not believe what I was telling him about not being able to bend my knee or lift my leg. He made me feel like I was making it all up, for whatever reason he might have suspected. He acted like he thought the only problem that I had was probably arthritis in my knee, and when I told him I had not been able to bend it in 5+ days, he looked as if he really didn't think that was true. After discussing what was going on with my leg, he came over to me and asked if he could try making it bend. I responded that I would prefer not because it was extremely painful to move it. He tried to bend it anyway, and within a very short amount of time(seconds), I asked him to stop. He did not want to stop, but did. I could not raise my leg either. He asked if he could try and support it and raise it to which I replied, I would prefer not. He tried to raise it anyway and I asked him to stop very quickly. I was very concerned about trying to bend it and raise it, especially not knowing what was wrong with it and because of the pain that it caused. He rolled back on his chair after these two interactions and very rudely asked me "what do you think is wrong with it? ". I responded to him that I thought the way that it felt and the way that I could not move it, that I probably tore something. I asked him what he thought it was, and he said,"I think it's gout, possibly, or some type of Arthritis. It was very evident from the moment he walked in the door that he thought it was not serious. He said we would get x-rays and he left. My 19 almost 20 year-old daughter was in the room with me because she had to drive me there, and before I could say anything, she told me how rude and disrespectful he was to me and that she was very uncomfortable with him helping me. I went and got the x-rays and when he came back in, he was a little nicer. The x-rays did show that there was not any arthritis and there was fluid behind the knee on the backside of my leg. He then referred me to an orthopedic, which is all I wanted in the first place and I went on my way. I did get to the orthopedic within two days and learned that I had torn a tendon. I am giving you exactly what happened and how it made me feel as a 56-year-old woman, who doesn't go to the doctor unless it is absolutely necessary. I feel quite certain, that he would not have treated a 56-year-old man with the same symptoms this way. I thought he could have been a little nicer to my nurse at one point, as well. He asked her to get something in a pretty rude way, which made both of us uncomfortable. I completely understand that it was right after the holidays and people were stressed and he was probably very busy. I tried to give him some grace for that. However, his bedside manner could improve tremendously. This will not keep me from going back to this particular clinic. I have had several interactions, either with me going to the doctor or one of my daughters going to the doctor, that have been very positive.
Comment - “ Andrew Cox is hands-down the mos... ”
Andrew Cox is hands-down the most thorough and caring PCP I have ever had. ECU Health, in general, provides the best of care. I truly hope that negotiations between ECU and United Healthcare go well and that a contract will be renewed, as I am planning to relocate to North Carolina from New York, specifically because of the excellent healthcare that I have received here.
