“Occipital Nerve Stimulation” May Bring Relief to Fibromyalgia Sufferers

“In fibromyalgia, we see that there is a hypervigilance to pain, so patients are more sensitive to pain and more aware of it.  They also have high scores on questionnaires concerning catastrophizing behavior, which implies the high impact of pain on their lives.  During [occipital nerve] stimulation we see differences in brain activity on PET scans in regions involved in pain, this all might suggest that we are influencing a cerebral system and might even turn it back to ‘normal’ perception.”  Dr. Mark Plazier

New Procdeure to Zap High Blood Pressure Looks promising

The kidneys play a major role in regulating blood pressure.  The renal nerves communicate information from the kidney to the brain and people with hypertension have hyperactive renal nerves, which raises blood pressure.  Renal Denervation treatment is in clinical trials to learn whether renal denervation is safe and effective.  The Simplicity HTN-3 clinical trial will attempt to disrupt the hyperactive nerves by applying radio frequency energy near the nerves with an experimental medical device.

Early Stages for Gene Based, High Accuracy, Noninvasive Testing Method to Detect Colon Cancer

There is great optimism for a newly developed, non-invasive blood test that can determine the presence of genetic changes (SDC2) which seemed especially tied to colon cancer growth and spread.  The test was able to detect stage 1 cancer 92 percent of the time, “indicating that SDC2 is suitable for early detection of [colorectal cancer] where therapeutic interventions have the greatest likelihood of curing the patient from the disease,” study lead author TaeJeong Oh said in the news release.

Early Stage Ahlzheimers Meds Seem to Reduce Heart Attack Risk & Death

“As far as we know, this is the first time that the use of ChEIs has been linked to a reduced risk of heart attacks and deaths from cardiovascular disease in general or from any cause.  As this is an observational study, we cannot say that ChEI use is causing the reduction in risk, only that it is associated with a reduction.  However, the strengths of the associations make them very interesting from the clinical point of view, although no clinical recommendations should be made on the basis of the results from our study.”    study author Professor Peter Nordstrom, of Umea University in Sweden
